Since May 2018, the tra­di­tio­nal JENA Carl Zeiss Optics Col­lo­quium has been held as the JENA Optics Col­lo­quium at the Abbe Cen­ter of Pho­to­nics on the Beu­ten­berg Cam­pus Jena or online. It is open to all inte­res­ted par­ties from rese­arch, indus­try and edu­ca­tion and sees its­elf as a forum for new tech­no­lo­gies in the field of photonics.

New dimen­si­ons for adap­tive optics in microscopy

Adap­tive optics (AO) is being widely adopted to cor­rect phase aberra­ti­ons intro­du­ced by micro­scope opti­cal sys­tems and spe­ci­mens. These aberra­ti­ons com­pro­mise image qua­lity by redu­cing con­trast and reso­lu­tion. Adap­tive ele­ments, such as defor­ma­ble mir­rors or liquid crys­tal spa­tial light modu­la­tors, are used to modu­late the opti­cal wave­fronts and remove aberra­ti­ons.  Such AO sys­tems have been deve­lo­ped for micro­scope appli­ca­ti­ons ran­ging from deep-tis­sue ima­ging of neu­ral acti­vity to super-reso­lu­tion micro­scopy.  Howe­ver, AO can be applied to opti­cal pro­per­ties other than phase.  We will dis­cuss deve­lo­p­ments in spa­tio­tem­po­ral con­trol of short-pulse lasers and light pola­riza­tion can fur­ther enhance the AO micro­scopy tool­kit bey­ond solely phase correction.

Prof. Mar­tin J. Booth

Prof Booth is Pro­fes­sor of Engi­nee­ring Sci­ence at the Uni­ver­sity of Oxford.  His rese­arch group is based in the Depart­ment of Engi­nee­ring Sci­ence and has many col­la­bo­ra­ti­ons in other depart­ments across Oxford.  His rese­arch invol­ves the deve­lo­p­ment and appli­ca­tion of adap­tive opti­cal methods in micro­scopy, laser-based mate­ri­als pro­ces­sing and bio­me­di­cal sci­ence. He has held Royal Aca­demy of Engi­nee­ring and EPSRC Rese­arch Fel­low­ships and in 2016 recei­ved an Advan­ced Grant from the Euro­pean Rese­arch Coun­cil.    He was appoin­ted Pro­fes­sor of Engi­nee­ring Sci­ence in 2014. In 2012 Prof Booth was awarded the »Young Rese­ar­cher Award in Opti­cal Tech­no­lo­gies« from the Erlan­gen School of Advan­ced Opti­cal Tech­no­lo­gies at the Uni­ver­sity of Erlan­gen-Nürn­berg, Ger­many, and a visi­ting pro­fes­sor­ship at the uni­ver­sity.  In 2014 he was awarded the Inter­na­tio­nal Com­mis­sion for Optics Prize. He has over 160 publi­ca­ti­ons in peer-reviewed jour­nals, over 25 patents, and has co-foun­ded two spin-off com­pa­nies, Aurox Ltd and Opsy­dia Ltd.

HISTORY

The JENA Optics Col­lo­quium goes back to a series of events orga­ni­zed by the Zeiss-Werke in Jena, which was initi­ally laun­ched in 1971 for the fur­ther trai­ning of employees. By attrac­ting top-class spea­k­ers, it quickly deve­lo­ped into an important dis­cus­sion forum for the country’s lea­ding optics experts.

After 1989, the col­lo­quium was con­tin­ued in coope­ra­tion with the Insti­tute of Applied Optics at the Uni­ver­sity of Jena, repre­sen­ted by Prof. Kowar­schik, and gai­ned fur­ther importance through the par­ti­ci­pa­tion of lea­ding sci­en­tists and com­pa­nies and the coope­ra­tion with the Fraun­ho­fer IOF and the Leib­niz IPHT, among others.
