Loca­tion

Thu­rin­gia, and Jena in par­ti­cu­lar, is an inter­na­tio­nally renow­ned high-tech loca­tion for pho­to­nics. Some 16,500 skil­led workers work on inno­va­tive pro­ducts and tech­no­lo­gies in 180 com­pa­nies and num­e­rous rese­arch insti­tu­tes. The region’s recipe for suc­cess can be tra­ced back to the revo­lu­tio­nary achie­ve­ments of Jena’s tri­um­vi­rate of Carl Zeiß, Ernst Abbe and Otto Schott in micro­scope con­s­truc­tion over 150 years ago – the close inter­ac­tion of busi­ness and science.

Since 2001, Opto­Net has been sur­vey­ing the industry’s growth figu­res every two years and asking all play­ers in Thu­rin­gia about sales, per­son­nel, mar­ket deve­lo­p­ment, exports, tech­no­logy pro­mo­tion and future fore­casts. The results appear in the PHOTONICS Report.
