518. JENA Optics Colloquium · Dr. Roman Kleindienst
Since May 2018, the traditional JENA Carl Zeiss Optics Colloquium has continued as the JENA Optics Colloquium at the Abbe Center of Photonics on the Beutenberg Campus in Jena and online. It is open to everyone interested from research, industry, and education, and serves as a forum for new technologies in photonics.
For the 518th edition of the colloquium, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Roman Kleindienst and his presentation.
From Precision Optics to Mass-Market Innovation: Advanced Microoptics for Aerospace and Automotive Applications
Over the past decade, significant advances in microoptical design, fabrication, and integration technologies have unlocked a wide range of new applications, spanning space systems, data-center communications, displays, and advanced sensing solutions.
This presentation highlights selected examples in which novel microoptics manufacturing and integration approaches have enabled breakthrough display and sensor systems for aerospace and automotive applications. Emphasis will be placed on the transition from highly specialized microoptical solutions developed for demanding semiconductor and medical technology environments to scalable manufacturing platforms capable of serving medium- and high-volume markets.
The talk will provide insight into the key technological innovations that made this transition possible, including high-precision fabrication processes, advanced replication technologies, and cost-efficient integration concepts. These developments enable the delivery of optical components with exceptional performance, quality, throughput, and cost competitiveness.
Through practical case studies, attendees will gain an understanding of how microoptics is evolving from a niche technology into a key enabler for next-generation sensing and display architectures across increasingly demanding industrial applications.
Dr. Roman Kleindienst
Dr. Roman Kleindienst has been leading ZEISS Microoptics since 2021. In this role, he is responsible for the development, production, and sales of innovative microoptics- and holography-based solutions for markets including semiconductor technology, medical technology, aerospace, automotive, consumer electronics, and home technology.
Before joining ZEISS in 2017, he spent eight years as Managing Partner of Ilmenau Optics Solutions GmbH.
He holds a doctorate in engineering (Dr.-Ing. / PhD) from Ilmenau University of Technology.

History
The JENA Optics Colloquium traces its origins to a lecture series initiated by the Jena Zeiss Works in 1971, initially established for the continuing education of employees. By attracting high-profile speakers, it quickly developed into an important discussion forum for the country’s leading optics experts.
After 1989, the colloquium was continued in cooperation with the Institute of Applied Optics at the University of Jena, represented by Prof. Kowarschik. With the involvement of leading scientists and companies, as well as cooperation with institutions including Fraunhofer IOF and Leibniz IPHT, it gained further significance.
