The Faculty of Physics and Astronomy at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena makes an outstanding contribution to the national and international visibility of Thuringia as a location for photonics. The focus of research at the faculty is in the fields of optics / quantum electronics, solid state physics / materials science, theoretical physics and astrophysics. In the field of teaching, courses on optics / photonics, theoretical physics with a focus on gravitational and quantum theory, and astronomy are offered in an above-average breadth with high quality. The tradition of engineering education is continued in the »Materials Science« course. In addition to the physics course, traditionally there are also the courses in teaching physics, with astronomy as a supplementary course or as a third subject. In addition, the Abbe School of Photonics offers an international Master of Science in Photonics. There is active cooperation with the local industry and various faculties of the university, which ensures application relevance and interdisciplinarity.
The research focus at the faculty is on the areas
