The Faculty of Phy­sics and Astro­nomy at the Fried­rich Schil­ler Uni­ver­sity in Jena makes an out­stan­ding con­tri­bu­tion to the natio­nal and inter­na­tio­nal visi­bi­lity of Thu­rin­gia as a loca­tion for pho­to­nics. The focus of rese­arch at the faculty is in the fields of optics / quan­tum elec­tro­nics, solid state phy­sics / mate­ri­als sci­ence, theo­re­ti­cal phy­sics and astro­phy­sics. In the field of tea­ching, cour­ses on optics / pho­to­nics, theo­re­ti­cal phy­sics with a focus on gra­vi­ta­tio­nal and quan­tum theory, and astro­nomy are offe­red in an above-average breadth with high qua­lity. The tra­di­tion of engi­nee­ring edu­ca­tion is con­tin­ued in the »Mate­ri­als Sci­ence« course. In addi­tion to the phy­sics course, tra­di­tio­nally there are also the cour­ses in tea­ching phy­sics, with astro­nomy as a sup­ple­men­tary course or as a third sub­ject. In addi­tion, the Abbe School of Pho­to­nics offers an inter­na­tio­nal Mas­ter of Sci­ence in Pho­to­nics. There is active coope­ra­tion with the local indus­try and various facul­ties of the uni­ver­sity, which ensu­res appli­ca­tion rele­vance and interdisciplinarity.
