Mechanical engineering and precision engineering have a long tradition in Ilmenau. The Faculty of Precision Mechanics and Optics was founded in 1955, from which today’s Faculty of Mechanical Engineering emerged in 1990 and became one of the largest faculties at the Ilmenau University of Technology. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is characterized by its precision engineering-optical-electronic profile. The following profile lines as interdisciplinary subject areas of basic research are in focus at the TU Ilmenau:

Functional materials & technologies:
This profile line is based on interdisciplinary research work in the development and application of functional materials and micro and nanomaterials, also through their targeted structuring. Using micro- and nanointegration methods, their usability in the macro world, e.g. for applications in sensor technology, electronics, energy technology, communication technology or in biosystem technology. The processes of micro- and nano-integration include a wide range of bottom-up and top-down methods for manufacturing and structuring, as well as comprehensive analysis.

Intelligent sensors and precision measurement technology:
This profile line encompasses the holistic research of nanopositioning and nanometrology, nanofabrication, intelligent process measurement technology and image processing. Other areas are the research and application of intelligent sensors and sensor networks in the automotive sector, in mechatronics and biomechatronics, as well as in manufacturing technology and factory automation.

Complex systems and data-intensive engineering:
This includes methods and techniques for the holistic development, production and use of complex technical systems, as well as the analysis of their distribution and impact on business and society. Specific areas of application at the TU Ilmenau are microsystem technology, digital media technology, software and automation technology as well as mobile communication. This also includes data-intensive methods for indexing and evaluating large amounts of data, for example in the field of measurement technology, sensor technology, medical technology, fluid mechanics and social media communication.
