News › Research Pupils Day at the Beutenberg Campus

On Thursday, April 28, 2022, it’s that time again. Parallel to Girls‹ Day, the Beutenberg Campus in Jena invites students to experience science. At the »Forsche Schüler Tag«, interested students from the 8th grade upwards have the opportunity to »try out« science for a day. They can choose from a wide range of activities offered by the participating institutes. For the first time, there will also be digital offerings in addition to the classroom events. In total, more than 75 places are available in five institutes.

The program of the Center for Molecular Biomedicine (CMB) of Friedrich Schiller University Jena is themed »Ingenious Cells«: cells are life, cells migrate, eat and multiply and cells can even learn. Here, different cells will be made visible and proteins from different tissues will be examined more closely.

The Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC) offers a series of lectures on »Activities, knowledge and research around the Earth system«. Afterwards, it invites students to learn about and try out the »Flora Incognita app,« which allows amateur botanists to identify native flowering plants using their own smartphones.

At the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology (MPI-CE), students look at the hidden structures of life and peer inside a plant. They learn why flower scents are attractive to hungry moths, how to visualize odor receptors of fruit flies, and how to chemically analyze scents. They’ll also learn what makes mustard so pungent.

This year’s online program of the Leibniz Institute for Research on Aging – Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI) is all about healthy aging. The institute provides insights into aging research and presents its apprenticeship programs for biology lab technicians, animal caretakers and, brand new, IT specialists for system integration/application development.

The Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute (HKI) invites you to an exciting »voyage of discovery into the world of microorganisms and natural products«. The girls and boys will experience how active substances are extracted from microbes, how small molecules can be made visible and what role fluorescent dyes play in this process, or when fungi can turn from friend to foe in our bodies. In addition, two digital offerings on »What is Omicron? An introduction to bioinformatics« and »A picture says more than 1,000 words – Introduction to bioinformatics analysis« are planned.

Most of the offers will take place in the institutes in presence under observance of the currently valid Corona regulations. However, it is also possible to use digital offers. Corresponding access codes will be sent to all registered participants individually by e‑mail from the respective institutes after registration.

All interested girls and boys from the 8th grade onwards can find out about the local offer at the Beutenberg on the Internet at www.beutenberg.de informieren and also register there directly by Tuesday, April 26, 2022 or have their legal guardians register them, provided they are not yet 16 years old.
