Optics Meet-Up @ KOMBINAT 01

3 Inputs · Talks · Networking

A strong expertise in the design and manufacturing of high-end optical components  – that’s what Jena region is famous for.
Please feel kindly invited to the 3rd edition of a unique gathering of leading scientists and developers, who openly discuss future challenges in photonics system design. This time the community will also raise the question in how far the local ecosystem can pave the way to an ongoing success.

We are looking forward to welcome you in the Kombinat 01 / Westbahnhofstr. 13.

#1 Magic Leap’s 2 advanced AR platform and revolutionary optics
Kristina UhlendorfTobias Hönle · Magic Leap

Magic Leap’s decade-long focus on premium AR has resulted in a revolutionary optical system. This presentation will provide a look at the advancements with the new Magic Leap 2 spatial AR headset including the novel projector architecture that results in the largest FOV delivered in a compact package. Precise eye tracking enables the largest, safe and comfortable display volume. Coupled with a new high performance CPU and GPU chipset and industry-leading eyepiece manufacturing process, Magic Leap 2 delivers a bright, crisp and uniform 3D display. Innovative segmented dimming technology means developers can deliver solid virtual AR content in a wide range of ambient environments.

#2 Will Jena be able to maintain its position in the optics and photonics industry?

Thomas Strzeletz · Photonics Precision Engineering

With its long history, excellent university and research institutes and the local companies, Jena is known for its optics and photonics competence and their contribution to the optical value chain.
However, investments in technologies such as photonic integration and quantum technology seem to be shifting this structure to other regions. A brief outlook, how these will affect the Jena ecosystem will be briefly explored in this presentation.

#3 … and what progress has been made with imaging diffractive optics? Status, challenges and perspectives of efficiency achromatization

Robert Brunner · Ernst-Abbe-Hochschule Jena › SciTec Applied Optics

Long before the term »meta-lens« was introduced, flat diffractive optical elements (DOEs) found application in various imaging systems. Today, the question is whether these DOE-based concepts have actually been convincing in real-world applications. Here, a particular challenge concerns diffraction efficiency, which is strongly wavelength dependent for simple DOEs. In principle, complex layer structures offer the possibility of tailoring the efficiency behavior, whereby boundary conditions must be taken into account. This contribution presents the current status on these multi-layer DOE concepts and discussions.
