No other place in the world is comparable to the City of Light Jena as a driver of innovation in optics. In order to make this unique selling point tangible, to position optics as a fascinating part of the MINT subjects and to promote the research location, the national flagship museum of optics is being built here as the German Optical Museum (D.O.M.).
For this purpose, the public-private partnership of the German Optical Museum Foundation, by Carl Zeiss AG, the Carl Zeiss Foundation, the Ernst Abbe Foundation, the Friedrich Schiller University (FSU) and the City of Jena has been established. With the help of tourism funding, the interactive world of optics will be created on an area of approximately 3,100 m² by 2026. Through its edutainment, the exhibition will for the first time holistically combine the functions of a science center with a museum collection and thus represent an innovation in the museum world. The D.O.M. will be housed in the historic opticians‹ school, which will be extended by a new building of outstanding artistic design. Here, a café will invite visitors to linger and pay permanent visits, and will facilitate receptions or other forms of special (customer) events.
